Samsung should stop using Snapdragon chips

...and go for it’s own Exynos branded silicon.

Kinja'd!!!

Why? It’s just as good. And they’re already using it in most of the world that isn’t ‘murica.

Using their own chips would allow them to better integrate and optimize their phones for both efficiency and performance.

It would differentiate their flagships from other Android flagships.

And it wouldn’t allow Huawei to become too distinctive with their own chips and their own OS(of course, Huawei was rather...forced to drop Android, but nevertheless they did and is bringing them closer to Apple(if the world will adopt their OS)).

I always thought they used their own chips, when did they start using snapdragon?

They should not. The Exynos chips are a serious downgrade compared to the Snapdragons to the point where there are multiple petitions against samsung in regions where the Exynos is used instead of the Snapdragon.

They already do. My phone is a 2019 model and it uses an Exynos 9611

Except it’s not.

2011 I think.

5 years ago or so. But they always split the chips between regions until this year. With the S20, the whole world gets Exynos, except for the US.

They always have on the flagships , even back to the original Galaxy S (Plus). Back in the days 1x CDMA was still the dominant network in the US (specifically Verizon), and having a Qualcomm SoC was the only way to support it. The only Exynos-only phone globally was the S6.

They usually use Snapdragons only on US and Canadian markets for a small number of models (usually the Galaxy S line at least) while using their Exynos on most other markets.

They even started to use Mediatek chips on lower-end phones lately.

The S20 I got this week uses the Exynos 990. It feels better than the Snapdragon powered S10 I got last year from the States. It is faster and it holds a charge for longer.

IIRC i t’s a patent issue. They’ve got an ongoing dispute with Qualcomm and can't currently use their own chips in NA.

Those differences are marginal. 99% of consumers have don’t know or care about them. If they were significant, the EU with its many consumers watchdogs would’ve done something about it.

In real life, it's just as good.

Huawei is not forced to drop Android which being open-source can’t be blocked that easily but it’s Google that is forbidden to do business with them and thus they can’t use the Google services which are not open-source.

It’s stupid as they can still get the benefit of Google involvement in developing Android but now can’t use anymore the Google tools that were the one paying for all of it while making the all of this making advertisement for Huawei in China (and the rest of the world) as being the victim of bullying.

The S6 back then was released with no Qualcomm variant.

Huawei might as well be dead in the water in North America, freebie phones aside. No trust.

Almost every Samsung device has been released with an Exynos processor in all of the world since Exynos started. What are you talking about? This is the first time in a very long time that a non-Exyno s Samsung was released in the States

If you think Exynos is something special then you clearly don’t know how their “design team” works. They get together and scroll through a checklist of possible components, power draws, and speeds and check off what they want. It’s all pre-made ARM options. There’s nothing special about it. It’s not possible for it to be faster than the benchmark ARM offering.

You’d know this if you ever “designed” and ARM chip before. The only thing you’ve done here is look like a typical inexperienced Samsung fanboy with a disdain for “ Murica”.

Im struggling to find a single accurate comment in this post. Your comments on Qualcomm, Exynos, Huawei, and Apple are are demonstrably false.

Samsung’s new and unreleased SOC’s with AMD’s Radeon mobile GPU and there 5nmin house Mongoose cores will put Qualcomm in it’s place . In the not to distant future. For future Exynos SOC’s. This should be explained.

There are now over 50,000 angry Samsung buyers (mainly the high end) that feel they were cheated as they called it, for buying a $1,000+ phone and go t an inferior product. For example, Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 865 and its Adreno 650 GPU (1.2Teraflops+ of FP32 Compute) have a noticeable lead over Samsungs latest Exynos SOC. Not just in the performance side of things , now there are reports of thermally capped frequencies (thermal throttling) and battery degradation and shorter battery cycles. Along with hotter temps all around. The performance difference alone is an issue without the other complaints. The CPU portion of the Exynos SOC has been tested and found to be an average of 5% slower and 10% in heavy compute scenarios. The Adreno 650 GPU leaves an even bigger gap. If Samsung would’ve used more GPU cores in ARM’s new (Valhal) scalable GPU then they at least could’ve fought the GPU problem. ARM’s new G-77 GPU is more than capable enough to beat a chart topper. For the longest, top end Snapdragon and Exynos SOC’s were not so different. Basically the same. Though , Samsung used ARM’s in house Mali- GPU and there own in house Mongoose cores . At times there own CPU cores were faster than Qualcomm’s. Each year, year after year. ARM has made big strides in there A-series CPU cores . Up to 45% gains in some cases. ( A72/A73 to the A75) . There average 30%+ year to year gains essentially forces SOC manufacturers to just use ARM cores. Like the Mediatek, Kirin, and Qualcomm SOC’s to name a few . Of course, some high performance cores would have there tweaks like Qualcomm’s Kryo/ARM derivative. But ARM of the shelf cores are the fastest and most efficient. (Other than Apple’s cores) We are talking about Android space here. Don’t get me started on iClones. Apple still uses Imaginations Technology PowerVR ( Fusion) architecture and still call it there own. Its not. I have worked with late Gen. IMG PowerVR GPU’s and they use the same foundation and have 4, 8, 16, 32bit FP compute capabilities. I know a few things about GPU’s. Especially mobile. Just wait until IMG PowerVR release there 2 Teraflop 4-9watt GPU. I kind of wished Mediatek would’ve stuck with PowerVR. They invented Ray Tracing and tile based rendering. Which nVIDIA now uses. Rant over. But, i didn’t go to far off the path. See, Samsung has been working with AMD and there mobile di vision for a new GPU. So, i have no doubt, if Samsung’s was to build a new SOC with a new Mongoose core and a GPU from AMD’s Radeon, that they would have a great competitor in there hands. Leaks have already shown the new Radeon mobile GPU in a Exynos SOC beating Qualcomm’s Adreno 650 in by a massive amount in 5 out if 10 highest graphic intensive tests . But, as of right now. Its Qualcomm and it ARM based Kryo/ A76/A77 derivative CPU cores and it’s in house black box Adreno GPU. Though, we are making some breakthrough’s with Qualcomm’s Adreno GPU. We now know how many ALU’s there using and have know since the Adreno 530 in the SD820/821. But, that’s only half the story. I put in my 2 cents. Sorry about the life of SOC’s and there biography...lol. I saw the title and had to say something. Hope you guys enjoy the read. If you want to see any great SOC and GPU comparisons.
